SUN Zhongxu, the Chinese translator of George Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm" passed away on Thursday in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, at age 41.
Insiders from the publishing industry revealed that Sun committed suicide due to depression and his son said "my father finally freed himself," the Beijing Times reported today.
Sun, a graduate of Zhengzhou University's foreign languages department, is also noted for his translation of "The Catcher in the Rye" by J. D. Salinger, which has sold about 100,000 copies in China.
The death of the amateur translator, also known as Luke Sun who works at a shipping company in Guangzhou, astonished many writers, translators and readers after the news was publicized on Sina Webo.
"Let's choose a book translated by Mr. Sun to read tonight to mourn for him," writer Zhang Yueran posted on her microblog last night.
