Traffic assistant attacks jaywalker with hammer
A traffic assistant in Qingdao City attacked a woman with a hammer on Tuesday after she refused to stop jaywalking at a busy intersection during rush hour.
Shanghai-based The Paper reported that police had the female traffic assistant, who is a volunteer, in custody and that the victim was in non-critical condition.
The young woman was seen arguing with the traffic assistant, who tried to stop her from jaywalking about 6pm, according to witnesses. The latter, wearing a volunteer’s red cap, astonished everyone when she suddenly took out a hammer and hit the jaywalker in the head.
The attack didn’t stop until the victim collapsed to the ground and was lying in a pool of blood, the report said.
Witnesses reportedly said the traffic assistant did not leave the scene or make any efforts to help the victim. The volunteer repeatedly shouted, “I will not let you run a red light,” according to the report.
Witnesses reportedly said the victim and the traffic assistant had a history of arguments over jaywalking.
Traffic volunteers are organized by local governments to help police keep traffic order and stop rule violations on the streets.
