Teacher, driver detained for 3-year-old girl’s death

A driver and a teacher at a privately run kindergarten have been detained after a three-year-old girl died of suffocation in a school bus in Yingde in Guangdong Province.

Zhong Miaolin was left in the 14-seater mini van for about eight hours when the temperature in the city was 35 Celsius degrees on Wednesday, Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.

No one had noticed that she was missing that day. A teacher surnamed Li, who accompanied students on board, failed to count her twice when the van drove to pick up another batch of students. Also, Zhong’s class teacher surnamed Tang didn’t ask her parents about her absence.

Zhong was finally found in a coma at 3:40pm when the driver surnamed Deng was washing the van. An ambulance was called to the International Art Kindergarten but doctors failed to save her despite emergency treatment, the newspaper said.

An initial police investigation found Zhong died of suffocation in the overheated vehicle. Police detained Li and Deng, and the city education bureau ordered the kindergarten to suspend operation.

"My daughter was lying on the floor of the kindergarten,’’ her father, Zhong Chaohui, said. ‘‘Her hair was drenched and her nose was bleeding. I called her name for a long time but she never answered.’’

Her parents were informed of the incident about 6pm on Wednesday when a local TV station called.

The kindergarten, built inside the Phoenix City community, told Zhong Chaohui that his daughter was forgotten for a day and was sick when he was called to check.
