Taiwan braces for arrival of tropical storm Fung-Wong
TAIWAN yesterday readied nearly 50,000 troops in preparation for tropical storm Fung-Wong as it churned toward the island with threats of downpours and powerful winds after claiming five lives in the Philippines.
Three counties in southern Taiwan decided to close offices and schools from last night while dozens of flights and ferry services were suspended, authorities said.
Uni Air, which canceled 12 domestic flights yesterday, said it will suspend all services scheduled for today.
In the southern metropolis Kaohsiung, TV footage showed residents piling up sandbags outside their homes on the roads badly damaged by gas explosions on July 31 that killed 31 people and wounded more than 300.
“Fung-Wong is maintaining its strength and is likely to make landfall in the south (today) when its impact will be the strongest,” the island’s weather bureau said.
