Student, 19, dies from water park injuries

A STUDENT who suffered burns over 90 percent of his body at a Taiwan water park party last weekend died yesterday.
Liu Chih-wei was 19 years old and had been a design student at the College of Maritime Technology in Taipei.
He was the second fatality after a 20-year-old woman was declared dead on Monday after suffering similar injuries when colored powder sprayed from a stage caught fire at the party on Saturday night.
More than 200 people are still in intensive care after the tragedy at the Formosa Fun Cost theme park on the outskirts of Taipei.
One of the injured was named as Alex Haas, 26, of New Hampshire in the United States, who suffered burns to his lungs and over 90 percent of his body.
The Chinese mainland has offered medical assistance for the victims.
The National Health and Family Planning Commission has summoned a team of surgeons specialized in burns and they are ready to leave for Taiwan immediately, the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said in a press release issued yesterday.
A number of renowned surgeons in the mainland have taken their own initiative to contact Taiwan hospitals to offer help, the release said.
The office is working with the health department and the mainland’s Red Cross Society to prepare medicines and devices that are needed for burn treatments, it said.
Several private companies and individuals also expressed willingness to donate medical devices.
China’s Ministry of Public Security yesterday urged fire departments to learn lessons from the Taiwan blaze so that similar incidents could be prevented.
An official said the case showed that event organizers did not know the danger of dust explosions, and fire fighting equipment on the scene was insufficient. A plan for emergencies was also lacking.
