Son of Jackie Chan arrested for allowing drugs at home

JAYCEE Chan, son of film star Jackie Chan, was arrested yesterday for allowing others to take drugs at his home, prosecutors in Beijing said.

If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison.

Chan, 32, was detained with Taiwan movie star Kai Ko on August 14 after police received a tip-off. Urine tests showed both had taken marijuana, and both confessed to having used the drug, police said.

Police seized more than 100 grams of marijuana at Chan’s home in the capital’s Dongcheng District.

Ko, 23, was released on August 29 after 14 days’ administrative detention for taking drugs.

He told police it was Chan who introduced him to drugs and he first tried marijuana at Chan’s home in 2012, according to videos provided by police to China Central TV.

On the videos, Chan said he first tried marijuana in the Netherlands in 2006, where personal consumption is tolerated. In the years that followed, he frequently invited friends to his home to smoke the drug.

Chan followed his parents into the entertainment industry. His mother is Joan Lin, a former Taiwan movie actress.

He starred in his first film and released his first album in 2003.

His father Jackie Chan said on Weibo that he felt ashamed and saddened over his son’s detention, and his wife was heartbroken.

“Jaycee and I together express our deep apology to society and the public,” he said.

“I say to Jaycee that you have to accept the consequences when you do something wrong,” he said. “As your father, I’m going to face the road together with you.”

In May, Li Daimo, a singer made famous on a TV talent show, was sentenced to nine months for allowing others to take drugs in his Beijing apartment.

In June, Beijing police detained film director Zhang Yuan for taking drugs. Detained the same month was screenwriter and novelist Chen Wanning, also known as Ning Caishen, for possession.

In August, TV actor Gao Hu was detained for possession and use of drugs.
