Senior zoo official facing corruption charge

XIAO Shaoxiang, the former vice curator of Beijing Zoo, has been prosecuted for corruption.
According to a statement issued yesterday by the Beijing No. 2 People’s Procuratorate, Xiao “is suspected of graft, taking bribes and owning a huge amount of property of unidentified provenance.” The case has been accepted by the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court.
The prosecutor said Xiao, while head of Taoranting Park and vice curator of Beijing Zoo from 2005-12, was involved in seven counts of graft, involving more than 14 million yuan (US$2.3 million). He is accused of pocketing 10 million yuan intended for renovation projects and to have asked for a payment of 220,000 yuan from a demolition company employed to remove an electricity substation.
The prosecutor said Xiao also accepted 100,000 yuan in commission charges to help a company win a bid, and was unable to provide provenance for a further 8 million yuan of his fortune.
The zoo was unavailable for comment yesterday.
