School refuses to take girl with HIV

An 18-year-old girl has been refused admission to a school in Wu’an, a city in north China’s Hebei Province, despite a State Council ban on discriminating against people with HIV, according to a report in China Youth Daily.
It did not say why she was applying for a school place at the age of 18 or where she had been studying beforehand.
The girl, known as Tingting, contracted the virus from her mother, the newspaper said.
This summer, she took the high school entrance examination and was admitted to the Wu’an No.10 Middle School. But on June 4 the school told her that her details couldn’t be found.
A school official told Shanghai Daily that it wanted to take Tingting, but said her infection might cause panic among other students and parents.
He said the school, the local government in her home town of Yicheng Township, and the education authority were trying to find her a school outside Wu’an in order “to protect her privacy.”
The school had allocated 50,000 yuan (US$7,850) to help her further study, which had been sent to the township government, he said.
In 1997, Tingting’s mother became infected with HIV after a blood transfusion several days after the girl was born. The hospital got the blood from illegal sellers and failed to check its safety, according to China Economic Times.
In 1999, the mother was diagnosed with AIDS and died soon after. Tingting’s infection was confirmed at that time.
In 2000, Tingting’s father sued the hospital, winning 360,000 yuan.
