CHINESE Premier Li Keqiang has met Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Trade, investment, and cooperation are on the agenda.

Li has stressed as the European Union’s current rotating chair, Italy is expected to play a more active role in enhancing Europe-China ties.

Li called for closer economic cooperation during his meeting with Napolitano.

Li encouraged more Chinese investors to come to Italy, and he said China welcomes more Italian companies to do business.
Napolitano agreed to push the relationship to a higher level. And he said Italy would play an active role in promoting China’s relationship with Europe.

Business topped the agenda for Premier Li’s meeting with Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

"Tonight we signed agreements for a total value of eight billion euros," Renzi said.

"This is a display of success. The scope of our trade and investment will expand even more in future," Li said.

The deals include investment in energy firms and Chinese banks opening new lines of credit to Italian companies.

Italy will supply China with 50 helicopters.

China is Italy’s second-largest trading partner after Europe. Last year, trade volume exceeded US$43 billion.

Premier Li mentioned Italy’s strategic location, and said the country is one of China’s closest friends within European bloc.

At the 10th ASEM summit in Milan on Thursday, China will work on deepening cooperation with Europe.

Italy is the last stop of Li’s three-nation Europe tour, which has taken him to Germany and Russia.
