Poster torn down after sexism row

THE marriage registration center of the Xicheng District Civil Affairs Bureau in Beijing has removed a poster after complaints it promoted sexual discrimination against women.

The wording on the poster read: “Being a good housewife and mother is the biggest ability of women. Why must you exhaust everything to take jobs from men?” Beijing News reported yesterday.

The accompanying illustration showed a man and woman standing side by side with their faces pressed together.

Internet users complained about the “offensive content,” the report said.

“My life is free and for me, it is not necessary to be bound to a man or a family,” a person said on Weibo.

“I am an independent woman with my own character,” the person wrote.

Another person described the poster as a “slap in the face of gender equality.”

An official with the marriage center was quoted as saying the wording on the poster was taken from a TV show and had been approved by the Beijing Association of Marriage and Family Development, the report said.
