Police officer questioned over car crash

A DEPUTY police chief is being investigated for allegedly fleeing the scene after crashing a police vehicle into a parked car in the south China city of Shenzhen, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Local traffic police named the suspect as Zhong Yujun, deputy head of the city’s forestry public security bureau, but declined to elaborate, the report said.

The incident happened about 8pm on Monday, when Zhong drove his police car into an unoccupied Bentley parked by the side of the road, it said.

Despite initially trying to drive away, the police officer, who was dressed in civilian clothes, was unable to restart his vehicle’s engine and instead fled on foot, unnamed witnesses were quoted as saying.

They also claimed they could smell alcohol on his breath.

Police officers are prohibited from using official vehicles unless they are wearing their uniforms, the report said.

Zhong was quoted as saying that he admitted to driving the car, but that he did so only after his own vehicle wouldn’t start.

He claimed he had felt sick after eating dinner at work and planned to drive to a pharmacy to get medicine.

He said he was driving slowly as he had forgotten his glasses, but could not avoid crashing into the Bentley.

Zhong admitted to not wearing his uniform, but denied being under the influence of alcohol, the report said.

He also denied fleeing the scene, saying that he first returned to work and then went to hospital, it said.

Following an initial interview, Zhong was allowed to return home pending a full investigation, the report said.
