Peking Opera master Mei Baojiu dies at 82

Mei Baojiu, a master of Peking Opera and also son of world-renowned opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), died today at the age of 82.

He was hospitalized on March 31 after a bronchus convulsion which led to difficulties with taking in oxygen.

His father was a renowned Peking Opera artist as well as a reformer of the genre.

His widely-acclaimed performances include "Farewell My Concubine," "The Drunken Beauty" and "Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command." He started learning Peking Opera when he was 10 years old and first took to the stage with his father at 18. He was regarded as a great contributor to traditional art across the country.
