Officials probed on lead from burglar
TWO senior officials in east China’s Anhui Province are being investigated by the Party disciplinary watchdog after it received a tip-off from a convicted thief that they are involved in graft.
One of the officials is from the provincial office of the China Banking Regulatory Commission and the other from the provincial food and drug administration, news portal ahwang.cn reported yesterday.
The investigation is based on a letter written by 20-year-old Fang Yunyun, who burgled the officials’ homes and claimed to have found evidence of their corruption, said Mou Liming, a spokesman for the Anhui Discipline Investigation Commission.
“We are taking the matter seriously and if we find evidence of corruption the guilty parties will be punished,” Mou said.
In the letter, Fang said that when selecting her victims she deliberately targeted officials in the hope of discovering their guilty secrets. In the event of her being caught, she could then use the information to bargain for a lighter sentence, the report said.
In March, Feng was caught by police in Jiangsu Province and charged with six thefts. As she was pregnant at the time, she was granted bail.
However, on March 22, while on bail, Feng traveled to Hefei, capital of Anhui, with the aim of burgling the homes of officials.
“I heard that rich people were living there. So I found out from the Internet where the officials worked and then followed them home from work every day,” Fang was quoted as saying.
On May 23, she broke into an apartment and stole about 600 prepaid shopping cards worth about 500,000 yuan (US$81,000) and various other items, including lavish gifts and expensive cigarettes, she said.
Three days later, she broke into a second apartment and stole prepaid shopping cards worth about 400,000 yuan. “I also saw lots of gifts and several real estate ownership certificates,” she was quoted as saying.
