No hiding place for 180 caught in ‘Fox Hunt’
A CRACKDOWN on corrupt officials fleeing abroad — dubbed operation “Fox Hunt” — has netted 180 suspects since it began on July 22, officials said yesterday.
They were extradited from 46 countries and regions with 76 surrendering to police and 104 arrested. In 44 cases, sums of tens of millions yuan were involved, the Ministry of Public Security said.
The number was higher than last year’s total, it said, and closer international cooperation was responsible for the increase.
The ministry had sent out lists of names to police in other countries asking for help and this had been met with a positive response from several nations formerly regarded as safe havens for criminals.
There had also been improved cooperation with neighboring countries, with China sending 20 teams of officers to Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia to arrest 75 suspects since the start of the crackdown.
On October 10, the ministry urged corrupt officials and suspects in economic crimes who had fled China to give themselves up if they wanted leniency.
If they don’t surrender before the six-month crackdown ends, no leniency will be shown, the ministry said.
