A MUSIC video that celebrates the love shared by President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan has gone viral online.
The video, titled “Xi Dada Loves Peng Mama,” was created by musicians Song Zhigang, Yu Runze, Xu An and Wu Bai, all of whom come from central China’s Henan Province.
“Xi Dada” (Father Xi) and “Peng Mama” (Mother Peng) are the nicknames given to the nation’s first couple by their online fans.
In an interview with Chinese Business View, Song said he came up with the idea to write a song about the couple after he saw their “close interaction” during the recent APEC summit on the news.
He said he wrote the lyrics in less than an hour, and his three friends then worked with him on the melody and video. The finished product was uploaded to the Internet at 11pm on November 18.
“I feel warmed by their simple and pure love,” Song said, adding that what touched him most was the moment when the couple clinked glasses and exchanged a glance during a cocktail party with foreign leaders.
Yu said he hoped the song will be used at the China Central Television 2015 Spring Festival Gala, a fixture for most Chinese families on the eve of Chinese New Year.
The video, which runs for 3 minutes and 24 seconds, includes real-life images and animations of the couple. One image shows Xi giving Peng a flower he had picked as they sat on a swing together during a visit to India in September.
The song’s lyrics include the lines: “China has an Xi Dada. He dares to fight the tigers on fears of nothing. I want to see him in my dream. China also has a Peng Mama. Let’s send her flowers and our best wishes.”
The song describes their love as “legendary” and “the strongest power” that can regulate the nation. It also urges men to learn from Xi and women to learn from Peng.
As of yesterday, the video had been viewed more than 50 million times on Tencent’s video website.
Xi was elected general secretary of the Communist Party in 2012 and has since won favor for his efforts to root out corruption.
In January 2013, he launched his campaign against tigers (high-ranking officials) and flies (low-ranking officials), which has since led to the demise of several key figures, including former senior Party leader Zhou Yongkang and former senior army general Xu Caihou.
Peng, too, has won acclaim. Fashion magazine Vanity Fair named her best-dressed first lady in 2013 and labeled her a style icon.
She is also an accomplished folk singer.
