Mirror superstition row ends in 8 deaths

A DISPUTE allegedly triggered by neighbors hanging a mirror on their gate to ward off bad luck ended up with eight people dying in a knife attack in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The incident occurred at around 4am in a village in Lushan County, Pingdingshan City, in the central China province of Henan.

Seven people died at the scene and one person who was seriously injured died later in hospital, according to Beijing News.

The victims — from the families of two brothers — were three children and five adults, including two elderly people.

The 41-year-old suspect, surnamed Li, who lived alone, handed himself in to police.

Officers said Li had objected when neighbors fixed a mirror on their gate, facing his door, saying it would bring him bad luck, reported Beijing News.

In China, mirrors are sometimes hung on gates to reflect bad luck away from a house.

Investigations are continuing.
