Minorities to be given bigger voice

THE central government yesterday promised to do more to cultivate and appoint officials from minority groups.

Attention should be paid to the cultivation of intellectuals from minority backgrounds, it said in a document titled “Opinions on Strengthening and Improving Ethnic Work under the New Situations.”

Authorities will “vigorously foster, audaciously select, fully trust and use officials from ethnically diverse (backgrounds), and cultivate experienced Han officials,” said the guideline, released jointly by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council.

It also called on ethnic minority officials to master Mandarin Chinese, and urged Han officials to learn the dialects of the areas in which they work.
