Matmo hits Fujian, but no reports of injuries

TYPHOON Matmo churned ashore in southeastern China yesterday and was downgraded to a tropical storm, while the death toll from last week’s more powerful Typhoon Rammasun rose further.

After passing across Taiwan overnight Tuesday, Matmo made landfall in heavily populated Fujian Province in southwest China. The national weather agency said it had gusts of 108 kilometers per hour and was moving at 20kph.

Fujian’s flood control headquarters said nearly 300,000 people had been evacuated as of yesterday afternoon.

Authorities in Zhejiang Province ordered about 30,000 fishing boats to return to port and stepped up patrols to watch for breaks in coastal and river embankments, Xinhua news agency reported.

The typhoon weakened after dumping heavy rain on Taiwan, where nine people were hurt and 31,500 homes lost power. High winds tore off roofs and uprooted trees, including one in Taipei that hit a taxi, injuring its driver and a passenger.

Emergency officials said three other people were hurt in Taipei and four elsewhere, either by falling trees or flying debris.

Financial markets, offices and schools were shut down, while almost 200 international and domestic flights were canceled, and rail services were interrupted, authorities said.

About 5,400 people living in mountainous areas prone to landslides were evacuated.

Matmo slightly weakened before it crossed the island to enter the Taiwan Strait and made landfall in Fujian’s Fuqing County yesterday afternoon.

It was set to turn north and pass over areas west of Shanghai, the Hong Kong Observatory said. Rains of up to 300mm were forecast in Shanghai and as far north as Jiangsu Province.

Further south, communities in Guangdong and Hainan provinces were clearing away debris left by Rammasun. The Ministry of Civil Affairs raised the death toll from the typhoon by 10 to 56, with 20 still missing.
