Macau chief executive re-elected unopposed with 95.96% of vote

CHUI Sai On was elected chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region for a second term yesterday, pending approval by China’s central government.

He won 380 votes from the 396 Election Committee members who attended the voting, or 95.96 percent of the vote.

Committee members began voting at 10am in the Macau International Convention Center in the Macau East Asian Games Dome.

Voting requires the attendance of two-thirds of members, and a candidate must obtain votes from more than half the members present to secure the seat.

Chui, whose current term ends on December 19, was the only candidate. He announced his bid for re-election on July 15.

At a press conference after the vote, Chui said that winning was the start to embracing new challenges for Macau as well as to implement his election declaration.

He pledged to devote himself to conducting the principle of “One Country, Two Systems,” while improving people’s livelihoods.

An official from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau said the election was the first since the central government settled Macau’s constitutional development in 2012.

The official said that during the election process, the candidate had listened to the opinions of different sectors from the society, and received an active response from the public, reflecting the successful implementation of the Basic Law of the region and the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

The official believed Chui would lead Macau’s people to seize the opportunities and tackle challenges to usher in a brighter future for the region with support from the central government.

Born in Macau in 1957, Chui holds a bachelor’s degree in community health from California State University and a master’s degree and PhD in public health from the University of Oklahoma.
