Jail for supercar crash drivers

Two young drivers whose supercars collided while they were racing in a Beijing tunnel were jailed for dangerous driving yesterday.

Tang Wentian, 21, who was driving a US$800,000 Lamborghini LP610, was jailed for five months at Chaoyang District People’s Court, while Yu Muchun, 20, who was at the wheel of a US$500,000 Ferrari 458, received a four month term.

The court heard that the pair were racing in Datun Tunnel at about 9pm on April 11. Investigations found that Tang was travelling at nearly 180 kilometers per hour, while Yu’s speed was more than 165kph.

The speed limit in the tunnel is 60kph.

The court heard that Tang and Yu lost control of their cars which collided with the tunnel wall.

Photographs showed the green Lamborghini almost cut in two by a central reservation fence.

Spinal fracture

The men were not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the district court said.

A 24-year-old woman surnamed Xu, traveling in Tang’s Lamborghini, suffered a fracture to her lower spine in the collision.

Tang was also fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,615), while Yu was fined 8,000 yuan.

Yu received a lighter sentence because he handed himself in to police, the court said.

“I’m wrong. I have caused negative social influences and hurt my family. I have realized how important it is to follow the law,” said Tang at the court.

Yu also expressed regrets, The Beijing News reported.

The families of Tang and Yu, who are both unemployed, have paid 320,000 yuan to repair damage in the tunnel.

They have also agreed compensation with Xu, according to the court.

Reckless driving is not uncommon within the district, with more than 110 cases filed so far this year, most of which involve use of alcohol and men in their 20s and 30s, the court said.

According to Phoenix News, Xu’s injuries will make it difficult to ever undertake strenuous exercise.

Beijing police launched an intensified crackdown on cars racing on April 24.
