Infant saved at last moment from being cremated alive in Hefei

AN infant born with birth defects and pronounced dead by a doctor was saved from being cremated alive today when a worker found him moving his hands and uttering feeble sounds just before his scheduled cremation at the mortuary house in Hefei, capital of eastern Anhui Province.

The boy, 7 days old, has been sent back to the Anhui Provincial Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

Jin Yulian, the hospital director, said the doctor who confirmed the boy’s death incurred a suspension and the nursing worker who sent the baby to the funeral house lost his job, the People’s Daily website reported.

The hospital had issued the death certificate as early as Monday, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.

Jin said before the baby was pronounced dead, the baby’s parents had made the decision to withhold extraordinary lifesaving measures due to his condition.

An anonymous insider said none of his relatives were with him after he returned the hospital at around 11am today, three hours after he was sent to the funeral house, according to People’s Daily website.

An official from Hefei Mortuary House said they received the baby because the hospital had issued the death certificate. But workers found he was moving and making noises when they made a routine check before the cremation, local news portal ahwang.cn reported.
