Hospitalized student suspects scholarship rival poisoned her

POLICE launched a probe after a sophomore from a university in northeastern China's Shandong Province accused a classmate of putting corrosive chemicals into her cup to poison her out of jealousy.

The woman, from Shandong Agriculture and Engineering University, was being treated at a local hospital and reported to be in stable condition, local media reported. A relative of the patient reportedly said the chemical put into her water cup could be a disinfectant.

The relatives told the media the woman suspected a classmate against whom she had been competing for top scholar honors. School authorities made no comment regarding the incident.

Police didn’t say whether anyone had been arrested or if they had any suspects.

In a previous incident, a former medical postgraduate student, Lin Senhao from Fudan University, was sentenced to death in February for poisoning to death his roommate, Huang Yang, last April.

The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court found that Lin, 28, killed Huang to avenge a grudge by putting a toxic chemical into a water dispenser they shared. Huang was also 28.
