FRIDAY marks the 110th birthday of the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. Deng was called the 'chief architect of China's reform and opening-up', for his efforts in leading China's modern-day transformation starting in the 1970s. His policies greatly promoted China’s economic development. And one of his lasting principles is "emancipate the mind, seek truth from facts". He was born in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

In the summer of 1919, Deng travelled together with his classmates to France on a work-study program. His study of Marxism began there. Deng joined the Communist Party of China in 1924, and also took part in the Long March in the 1930s. He died in Beijing in February 1997, at the age of 93.
