Four badly-behaved Chinese tourists named and shamed

The names of four blacklisted tourists were published by China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) on Thursday with the aim to raise public awareness of tourism etiquette.

The four people were involved in some of the most notorious tourist incidents.

Two tourists, surnamed Zhang and Wang, brawled with flight attendants while onboard a plane from Thailand to Nanjing in December last year. Zhang threw hot water on the back of an attendant and Wang threatened to bomb the aircraft. The in-flight brawl forced the plane to return to Thailand.

CNTA said Zhang and Wang will be listed on its record of badly-behaved tourists for two years between March 24, 2015 and March 23, 2017.

The practice of a "bad behavior record" was first introduced by the CNTA in March amid growing concern about the ill manners of Chinese tourists both at home and abroad.

It remains unclear how the "blacklist" status will affect the offenders, but experts say the rule functions more as a warning. These tourists will likely face more restrictions when they sign up for group tour or seek lodging in hotels.

Another tourist surnamed Zhou will also stay on the blacklist for two years as a punishment for his opening a plane hatch mid-flight in January.

The longest blacklist term was given to the tourist surnamed Li, who climbed on top of a Red Army statue for a photo in late April. He will stay in the blacklist for 10 years, the record length.
