Flights delays to last until mid-August
THE flight delays affecting major airports in China is likely to last for a month with the Civil Aviation Administration of China reportedly issuing a directive to domestic airlines to limit the number of flights, media reports claimed yesterday.
The delays have affected 12 airports in the east and central China. They include Shanghai’s two airports — Hongqiao and Pudong — and airports in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Nanjing, Wuxi, Lianyungang, Hefei, Jinan, Qingdao, Wuhan and Zhengzhou, the Beijing News reported yesterday.
The newspaper quoted a civil aviation source as saying it has issued notices to domestic carriers to cut down the number of flights for a month because of air traffic restrictions. Though the authorities remained tight-lipped for the reasons for the restrictions, the official microblog of China Central Television and China National Radio’s website reported yesterday that the delays will last for a month.
Media reports said the delays and cancellations will last until August 15 because of military drills.
Some of the domestic airlines in east China confirmed they were struggling with massive delays and flight cancellations since Sunday.
Passengers are being told to contact their carriers before heading to the airports.
The country’s flagship carrier Air China has made arrangements to help passengers to get refunds or change their flights.
Separately, the People’s Daily reported yesterday that the People’s Liberation Army will hold 10 live-fire military drills across the nation from July to October.
Ten rocket artilleries and air defense artilleries from six major military divisions — Nanjing, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu and Jinan — will take part in the maneuvers, the People’s Daily reported.
Shanghai’s two airports have been affected by cancellations and delays since Monday. Nearly 200 flights were canceled at the city’s two airports on Monday. About 120 flights were delayed for more than two hours, the Shanghai Airport Authority said without giving any reason.
Over 70 flights were canceled and over 100 delayed yesterday.
Air traffic controllers would only say that the disruptions were due to “air traffic restrictions.”
A China Eastern notice for its passengers said that the delays were because “other users occupied the air space.”
