Family of protester killed in blaze get 1.5m yuan payout

THE family of a man from Pingyi County, east China’s Shandong Province, who died after setting himself on fire in an attempt to stop the demolition of his home has been paid 1.5 million yuan (US$236,000) in compensation.

The money will be paid by the county government, which will also provide the family of the victim, Zhang Jimin, with a 115-square-meter apartment, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The family was paid 500,000 yuan on September 26 after signing a settlement agreement, and the balance on September 30, after Zhang was cremated, his nephew Zhang Yong was quoted as saying.

Zhang Jimin’s body was discovered in the storeroom of his home in Pingyi on September 14 after the emergency services were called to tackle a blaze at the property.

Local police ruled out arson and concluded that Zhang had started the blaze himself.

Another of his nephews, Zhang Dezhi, was quoted in an earlier report by Southern Metropolis Daily that his 46-year-old uncle had been unhappy with a compensation offer and had refused to move.

Zhang deliberately locked himself in the house, the relative was quoted as saying.

Zhang Dezhi alleged also that a group of local workers sent to demolish the house on September 14 had attacked and severely beaten Zhang Jimin’s wife after the couple resisted their efforts to raze their home.

The wife was knocked unconscious in the assault, the report claimed.

Several people were subsequently detained, while a number of senior Party officials at the local level were sacked, it said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, yesterday’s report said.
