Ex-hospital director ‘in 115m yuan graft’

A FORMER hospital director in southwest China’s Yunnan Province has been accused of taking bribes worth 115 million yuan (US$18.5 million).
Wang Tianchao accepted 35 million yuan cash, 100 properties worth 80 million yuan and 100 parking spaces while director of Yunnan No.1 People’s Hospital from 2005 to 2014, according to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.
In return, Wang abused his position to help companies secure contracts for engineering projects and medical equipment purchases and help individuals get promotions, claimed Xu Jinhui, anti-bribery chief of the SPP, yesterday.
Wang was investigated for suspected severe discipline and law violations last September, after he was nominated as Party secretary of Yunnan Food and Drug Administration.
The 58-year-old started his career as a doctor before being promoted to deputy office director of Yunnan No.1 People’s Hospital.
He was then general manager of a drugs company and section chief of the provincial health department, before returning to Yunnan No.1 People’s Hospital in 2004.
Sources told news website thepaper.cn that Wang is linked connected with Bai Enpei, Yunnan’s former Party chief who is being investigated for alleged bribery.
It is said that under Bai’s patronage, Yunnan No.1 People’s Hospital recruited many experts, and Wang set up a team to take care of Bai.
No details of a trial date were given.
Meanwhile, the National Health and Family Planning Commission is to place “tip-off boxes” in hospitals where patients can report doctors who accept bribes.
