Ex-Taiwan chief gets sick leave from jail
FORMER Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has been granted a month’s medical parole after serving more than 6 years in prison for corruption, local judicial authorities said yesterday.
Chen was released from Taichung Prison yesterday afternoon but will return when his condition has stabilized, the judicial authority told a news conference.
The release request was approved during a hearing yesterday at which it was deemed Chen can’t receive proper treatment in prison.
He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2013 for embezzlement, bribery and money laundering in relation to mergers and acquisitions for Taiwan financial institutions.
He has been in custody since November 2008.
The 64-year-old has repeatedly requested medical parole as his health has deteriorated.
He is said to be suffering from mental function deterioration, sleep apnea and incontinence.
During his month-long leave, officials and medical staff will monitor his health and when his condition has improved, he will be required to return to prison.
