Emergency on Air China flight after bomb threat
POLICE detained three passengers after a bomb scare forced an Air China flight with more than 100 passengers on board to make an emergency landing in southwest China yesterday.
Flight CA1336 from Nanning in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to Beijing was diverted to Chongqing around 2pm after a female passenger surnamed Wang threatened to blow up the Airbus 321, airport authorities said.
Photographs posted online by passengers showed SWAT officers boarding the aircraft after it landed and several police vehicles, ambulances and fire trucks parked on the apron.
Wang and another two passengers were taken away by airport police for questioning, according to Xinhua news agency. It gave no details about the other two passengers or their involvement in the incident.
After a thorough inspection of the aircraft and all the remaining passengers, the jet took off for Beijing around 5pm.
Air China said the flight landed at Beijing Capital International Airport around 7pm, four hours later than scheduled.
One passenger’s online post claimed that the woman had said she wanted to kill herself after her boyfriend had ended their relationship.
The maximum sentence for a bomb hoax is five years in prison with the possibility of a civil action for damages by the affected airline.
Last May, a man who threatened to blow up a plane in a dispute over his hotel accommodation was sentenced to five months’ detention by a court in Shanghai.
The man, surnamed Wang, had been offered a hotel room after his flight from Shanghai to Fuzhou in southeast China had been canceled. But he was said to be unsatisfied with the room.
