Doctors treating patients as demolition team starts work

Workers started to demolish a hospital building in central China’s Henan Province yesterday while doctors and patients were still inside.

They knocked down a wall of the radiology department at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in Henan Province, damaging medical equipment and burying a morgue that had six bodies in it, the Dahe Daily newspaper reported.

About 30 people in camouflage uniforms arrrived at the hospital with a bulldozer at 9:20am, a press officer said.

The local government wants the building demolished to widen a road but has, so far, failed to reach an agreement with the hospital. Officials denied that the government was behind yesterday’s incident.

Liu Chunguang, director of the radiology department, told the newspaper: “I was doing an X-ray on a patient when a big hole was dug in the wall. The patient was freaked out and ran away.”

Three doctors who tried to get back into the building to save equipment were injured in clashes with the workers, the newspaper said.

Police are investigating.
