Doctors remove needle from little boy’s brain, plan surgery on twin brother

Surgeons took out a 2.5-centimeter-long syringe needle from the brain of a 2-year-old boy yesterday in Zhengzhou, capital of central China’s Henan Province, and planned a similar operation on his twin brother tomorrow.
The leading surgeon, Qi Lin, from Zhengzhou Children’s Hospital, said the boy had been transferred to the intensive care unit and his condition couldn’t be estimated. The boy’s twin brother, who was also found to have a needle in his brain but in a deeper area, was scheduled to undergo the surgery tomorrow, Qi told the Zhengzhou Evening News.
The boys’ grandparents took the twins to the hospital because they had vision problems. Gradually, they lost their sight and medical checks found the needles. The grandfather, Shi Liujian, suspected the boys’ mother, who suffered from mental illness, pricked the needles into their heads after he picked up a bag of syringe needles when the brothers were just 3 months old.
The boys suffered malignant keratitis at 3 months of age and then lost their sight. Though the needles are being removed, doctors said it was unlikely the boys would regain sight, China News Service reported.
