Deadly clash: 16 officials punished

SIXTEEN officials in Jinning County, southwest China’s Yunnan Province, have been dismissed or suspended from duty in response to a land compensation dispute that turned ugly on October 14, leaving eight people dead and 18 others injured, Kunming Daily reported yesterday.

Li Xu, a standing committee member of the county Party committee and its secretary of politics and law commission in charge of maintaining stability, and Chen Haiyan, a vice Party chief of the county, were removed from their posts for serious dereliction of duty and will be put on file for Party discipline investigation, the Kunming Party committee and discipline inspection commission said in a statement.

Xu was held responsible in the incident as he failed to find and solve the problem in Fuyou Village by talking directly to the villagers. He did not arrive at the site of the conflict in time nor did he take decisive measures to prevent the clash, the statement added.

Yue Weiming, county head and another Party chief, was suspended from his duty for further investigation. Yue did not reach the clash site in time either, it said.

Hou Xiaobing, vice county chief and director of its public security bureau, was also suspended and would be further investigated for failing to deal with the conflict in time.

Yang Dan, the political commissar of the county public security bureau, and Tao Xirun, a standing committee member and head of the organization department of the county Party committee, have been suspended as well and will be further investigated.

Ten other officials from Jinning’s Jincheng Town, including vice Party chiefs and police officers, were also removed or suspended from duty for the clash. Discipline watchdogs will further investigate the incident and punish others who are deemed responsible.
