Dead fish concern

TIANJIN’S environmental monitoring center said yesterday that no toxic levels of cyanide had been detected in an area where dead fish had been spotted, Xinhua news agency reported.

Tests had been conducted at a section of the Haihe River, several kilometers from the site of the explosions, the center said, after dead fish had been found on the seashore next to Tianjin’s Binhai New Area, about 6 kilometers from the blast site.

Deng Xiaowen, the center’s director, told reporters that the water quality there was poor and dead fish had been found in the area over the past few years.

He said that if chemical pollution was detected, more monitoring spots would be set up in the area.
