Dead fish and shrimp suspected to be poisoned

Big numbers of dead fish and shrimps were found floating in a river in Jurong, Jiangsu Province, yesterday, which residents suspected have been poisoned, and a newspaper said that they may have already been sold to the market.
Jurong residents told Yangtze Evening News yesterday that fishermen would rather sell the dead fish and shrimps to aquatic product retailers than eat them.
A resident told the newspaper that he cooked a still struggling fish which “smelled like gas.”
Residents suspected that a chemical plant along the river may be responsible for the poison. The factory, Zhenjiang Tiandiren Chemical Engineering Co Ltd, has been illegally discharging sewage into the river since it was opened in 2006, the newspaper reported.
The poisoned river is the eastern part of Qinhuai River, the main river that flows through Nanjing, the provincial capital.
Witnesses told the newspaper that at least 5 to 6 square kilometers of the river stretching from Jurong to Nanjing’s Jiangning District were polluted, leading the police to investigate.
A resident surnamed Zhou told the newspaper he was suspicious on finding several sewage pipes buried underground.
Residents said the plant discharged sewage once to twice a week, usually on Friday night and weekends.
Every time the sewage went into the river, fish and shrimp would gather together to try to swim to the lower reaches of the river or they were dying.
