Customs busts fur smuggling case worth 7.6b yuan

CUSTOMS authorities in Guangdong Province uncovered a high-grade fur smuggling case involving illegal imports worth 7.6 billion yuan (US$1.25 billion), including some fur from such protected animals and fox and mink, the General Administration of Customs said today.

Twenty-six suspects were arrested and more than 1 million pieces of animal fur were seized. Authorities in Shantou deployed 370 police officers to investigate the case early this year.

Smuggling suspects were accused of illegally importing unprocessed fur purchased in North America and northern Europe. They imported them into China’s mainland using shipping firms in Hong Kong. The furs were falsely labeled as processed materials and often transported in large cargo containers to make inspection more difficult.

The demand for high-grade fur has risen in recent years, increasing the potential profit for smugglers.
