Citizens of the world rate Xi as top leader

PRESIDENT Xi Jinping is the top-performing world leader according to an international survey published in the Harvard Gazette, the official news outlet for Harvard University in the United States.

Xi was rated top for his performance both at home and abroad in a list of 10 world leaders which included US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Chinese citizens rated his performance a 9 (on a scale of 1 to 10) while those in other countries gave him 7.5, still above India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 7.3 and German Chancellor Angela Merkel at 7.2.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was the worst-performing leader in the eyes of other countries with a rating of 6. Third to last was French President Francois Hollande (6.3) with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe bringing up the rear on 6.1.

The results showed Xi is highly thought of in much of Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe but also well regarded in most of the 30 countries in the survey, with the notable exception of Japan, which gave him a rating of just 3.8.

Respondents in India, Russia and China overwhelmingly believed their countries to be moving in the right direction, with the leaders of these three nations, not surprisingly, enjoying the highest domestic support.

At home, Xi enjoys the highest level of confidence at around 94 percent in his handling of domestic and international affairs. In second place was Modi at around 93 percent, while Putin came in third at almost 86 percent.

But when ranked by foreigners in that category, Xi ranked second, following Merkel.

Xi came 4th in a list of leaders that people rated most significant, with Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Cameron taking the top three places.

Apart from China, Xi is most closely taken note of by citizens in South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Pakistan and India.

Researchers questioned 26,577 people from 30 countries in five continents on their opinions of the most widely recognized leaders.

Other world leaders included in the survey were Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and South African President Jacob Zuma.
