Chinese tourist drowns off Malaysian island

A tourist from south China’s Guangdong Province drowned at sea while he was swimming off the holiday island of Perhentian Besar, the Malaysia-based The Star Newspaper reported today.

Liu Feng, 31, had gone to sea with his wife and two friends to swim and snorkel at around 5pm yesterday, according to the newspaper.

“After about 30 minutes, one of his friends could not spot Liu in the sea,” said Terengganu CID chief ACP K. Manoharan yesterday, the report said.

“So, he asked a resort worker on the island for help.”

A search-and-rescue team was then deployed to look for Liu.

However, they found his body floating near Turtle Point, a snorkelling spot off the island at 7pm.

“He was pronounced dead after he was taken to a local clinic on the island.

“The body was then sent to the Besut hospital for post-mortem,” said ACP Manoharan.

Yesterday afternoon, Liu’s wife and friends waited outside the hospital’s mortuary to claim his body.

They were in a distraught state and refused to speak to anyone.

Apparently, the Chinese embassy had arranged for the body to be sent back to China.

Although resorts on the Perhentian islands have reopened after the end of the monsoon season, the sea was still turbulent.
