Chinese student robbed in Melbourne's chaotic night

A Chinese student has been robbed in Melbourne, Australia's second-biggest city, while a street gang clash erupted in the city's CBD, sources confirmed on Sunday.

The victim, a Chinese student of Kilmore International School, said in an email sent to Consulate General of China in Melbourne that his phone got robbed near RMIT university at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.

"About 20 black people walked towards me. One of them robbed my phone then ran away,"the email reads.

The case has been referred to local police and a safety warning was immediately issued by the Consulate General of China in Melbourne, reminding Chinese students to be more cautious and be on high alert in public areas.

"Avoid going out alone at night and if you have to, go out with a group of people,"the warning said.

The safety warning wasn't just triggered by a single robbery case.

A violent street fight between two rival gangs erupted in Melbourne's CBD at the same night. About 200 members from local gangs named "Apex" and "Islander 23" staged an confrontation on street. The two-hour battle reportedly spread to nearby streets after breaking out on Federal Square, until local police forced it down with capsicum spray.

One man was hospitalized due to serious injuries. A number of youths were arrested at the scene while others fled on foot.

In the meantime, the overnight incident is currently under investigation, according to Victorian Police's statement released on Sunday noon.
