WEDNESDAY marks Chong Yang Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival as it is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.

It is a traditional festival in China for people to pay their respects to elderly people and to appreciate the wisdom they can pass down.

The elderly celebrate the festival by enjoying beautiful autumn scenery, climbing mountains, drinking chrysanthemum wine and sweeping the tombs of their ancestors. It is the third year that China celebrates the festival as Elders' Day, following the Chinese government dedicated it in 2013 as a special day to care for seniors.

At the end of 2014, China had a population of more than 200 million over the age of 60. That number is expected to reach more than 480 million by 2050. The aging problem has become pervasive in China's modern society.
