Child killer who ‘wanted to die’ executed in Beijing

A MAN found guilty of killing a 2-year-old girl was executed yesterday, a Beijing court said.
The execution of Han Lei took place after the Supreme People’s Court upheld the death sentence handed to him, the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court said on its Sina Weibo account.
Han, 40, was convicted of killing the girl after arguing with her mother over a parking space in Beijing’s Daxing District in July last year.
Prosecutors were told that he grabbed the girl and threw her to the ground before fleeing the scene.
The girl died in hospital a couple of days later.
When Han was arrested, he told police he had been drunk at the time of the altercation.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage.
At his trial in September 2013, Han was found guilty of intentional homicide and given the death penalty.
He lodged an appeal, but it was rejected by the Beijing Higher People’s Court in November.
According to earlier media reports, Han was alleged to have said last year that he was full of remorse and wanted to die.
“Please make sure I am sentenced to death. I don’t want to live any more,” he was quoted as saying.
In 1996, Han was sentenced to life in prison for stealing a car, but was released in 2012 after the sentence was commuted, the reports said.
