Celebrations start early for oldest panda

BIRTHDAY celebrations started early yesterday for Basi, China’s oldest giant panda, who turns 35 in November.

Reaching 35 for a panda is like a human reaching 100, said Chen Yucun, head of the research and exchange center in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, where Basi lives. In the wild, giant pandas live for about 15 years.

The birthday celebrations, hosted by the center, will run for six months to help raise public awareness of the need for panda protection, Chen said.

As well as the production of an animated film and several books about Basi, there will be presentations at schools and public appearances by “panda ambassadors,” he said.

Born in Baoxing County, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, Basi is possibly the most famous panda in China. In 1990, she was chosen as the model for Pan Pan, the mascot of the Beijing Asian Games.

In 2000, she became the first panda in the world to undergo a cataract removal procedure.
