Canadian woman to pay victim’s family 600,000 yuan as compensation deal reached in Great Wall fatal fall case

RELATIVES of a woman who died after falling over on the Great Wall will reportedly get 600,000 yuan (US96,774) in compensation from a Canadian woman allegedly involved in the incident.
The two sides reached a consensus on the amount of compensation on April 21 after two days of pretrial mediation at the Huairou District People’s Court in Beijing, and the money will be delivered in 15 days, Beijing News reported today.
The Canadian woman apologized to the sons of the victim, surnamed Cui, during the mediations and this apology was accepted, according to Zhao Fuxing, an attorney for the victim’s family.
The accident happened early this month when Cui, a woman in her 70s from Jiamusi in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, was said to have been knocked over by the Canadian on the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, the newspaper reported earlier.
A relative told a reporter with the paper: “She (the foreigner) walked down the steps very quickly. Cui was not holding the handrail and got knocked down.?
Police told Cui’s family there was no criminal case to answer and suggested they opt for civil action, the newspaper said.
