Boy loses part of ring finger forever in another escalator ride accident

A 3-year-old boy had his finger partly severed accidentally during an escalator ride in a supermarket in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, over the weekend.

The toddler reportedly fell on the escalator with his right hand stuck in the running stairway, Qianjiang Evening News reported Tuesday.

According to the newspaper, the accident took place at a RT-MART outlet in Yiwu City Sunday afternoon, when the boy, surnamed Fang, and his aunt were waiting for his grandma near the escalator.

The surveillance video showed that holding the boy in her arms, his aunt took the escalator down to the second floor and then stood by the escalator at 2:12pm. Four minutes after, the boy, who was put down by his aunt, stepped onto the escalator, which was moving downwards. He tried to go by the opposite direction and then fell over with his right hand clipped by the stairs.

After the woman picked the boy up, she found part of his ring finger was severed and stuck in the gap between two stair steps.

The boy was rushed to a local hospital after receiving basic treatment on the scene.

Supermarket staff said they later tried to recover the boy's finger part from the escalator but failed. The supermarket management said it's willing to help with the boy's medical treatment.

After a surgery, the boy's right hand can still function normally despite the missing of part of the finger, according to the hospital.
