Boy, 4, seriously injured after parents quarrel

A 4-YEAR-OLD baby was severely burnt during a domestic quarrel in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province.

The Hangzhou-based Metro Express reported yesterday that the incident happened after the 40-year-old mother, identified as Shen Dan, threatened to feed the baby with gasoline. When her husband intervened, they accidentally overturned the stove, which caught fire.

The couple had been feuding and the wife had threatened to kill their son and then commit suicide.

According to the 48-year-old husband, surnamed Zhang, his wife came home from work on Thursday afternoon and told the son she had brought snacks for him. He saw his wife feeding the son from a soft drink bottle, which turned out to be gasoline.

In the ensuing tussle, they accidentally hit the stove. Their son was caught in the fire.

The baby was taken to Jinhua Center Hospital where he was admitted into ICU. Doctors said he had suffered third-degree burns. They fear  he could lose his eyesight and even his voice.

The couple also suffered 15 percent burns on their body. The mother was still unable to talk.

Zhang said they frequently quarreled because of financial constraints. It was the second marriage for both.

Zhang has a 20-year-old daughter, who lives with them, from his first wife. A relative told the paper that Shen did not treat the girl well.

The family was not rich and was reportedly in debt. The new medical costs is likely to add to that burden.
