Boy, 3, positive for H7N9 bird flu in Guangdong

A 3-year-old boy was confirmed to be infected with H7N9 bird flu, Guangdong Province Health and Family Planning Commission said in a statement today.

The boy is a Sichuan province native living in a village of Dongguan City. The Dongguan City Center for Disease Control and Prevention detected a sample positive for H7N9 bird flu virus through routine monitoring of flu-like cases in Changping Hospital yesterday afternoon.

A double check at the Guangdong Province CDC confirmed the infection and announced the patient as a H7N9 patient based on his clinical symptoms, epidemioligcal history and laboratory testing result this morning.

Currently, the patient has been hospitalized at Dongguan City People's Hospital for free treatment in isolation. The boy is in stable condition and he has no fever and other flu-like symptoms are not serious, the commission said.

All seven people who had close contact to the boy have received medical observation. So far three people have shown flu-like symptoms, while all seven were negative to H7N9 virus.
