Black bear from Russia prefers China
A BEAR from Russia which crossed into China, causing a stir in a border town, has been captured and released into the wild.
The small black bear was spotted swimming across the Wusuli river into Raohe County in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province on Saturday morning, according to local frontier guards.
Fishermen tried to scare it away but failed. It landed at a riverside park, causing panic among visitors and prompting police to evacuate nearby residents.
Probably equally frightened, the animal fled into a house. Forestry officials subdued the animal with an anaesthetic dart and released it in a forest well away from residential areas.
The county government said four bears had been spotted crossing the border into Raohe since August 20.
There have an increasing number of reports of tigers and bears crossing into China from Russia thanks to an improved environment along the border.
Last year, two Siberian
tigers released into the wild by Russian President Vladimir Putin wandered into China.
