Beijing to limit traffic in run-up to parade
Beijing is cutting the number of vehicles on the streets and shutting factories to ensure clean air during events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, the city government said yesterday.
A military parade on September 3 will be a highlight of a series of events planned for the anniversary of Japan’s formal surrender on September 2, 1945.
From August 20 to September 3, the city will halve the number of vehicles allowed on the streets, restricting cars according to their licence plate numbers, the People’s Daily said. Vehicles with out-of-town plates and heavy trucks will be banned.
Air traffic will also be affected.
On the day of the parade, Beijing Capital International Airport and Nanyuan airport will be closed between 9:30am and 12:30pm.
The city will impose temporary controls on industry, coal-burning boilers and construction, forcing firms to either stop or curb operations during the period, Reuters reported.
The capital, which has been enveloped by smog for the past few weeks, often enacts pollution controls ahead of major events such as the 2008 Olympic Games and a meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum leaders last year.
The city government said it was drawing on the experience of the Olympics and the APEC meeting to ensure “the full protection of air quality during the commemoration.”
Workers are to be given three days off over the anniversary, ostensibly to ease congestion in the city.
