Bail for 'Old Playboy’ on vice charges

A CHINESE-American startup investor and microblogger charged with using prostitutes has been freed on bail after months in detention.

Xue Biqun, - also known by his online name Xue Manzi - was given bail because he is suffering a “serious illness,” said Beijing police.

The 61-year-old says he suffers from diabetes and coronary heart disease, has had a stroke and was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer.

Xue appeared on China Central Television on Wednesday evening, admitting to visiting sex workers and apologizing to his wife and children.

“I have committed a crime, have confessed and have repented,” Xue said.

Xue was held by police last August after he was caught with a 22-year-old prostitute in her apartment in the capital’s Chaoyang District.

He was arrested by prosecutors on October 10 and placed in custody in Beijing.

Xue was alleged to have paid for sex with at least 10 sex workers in a four-month period.

They said he was a frequent visitor and liked group sex with several women Ñ insisting that they must be “young, slim and sexy,” the Beijing Times reported at the time.

Sex workers said Xue was known as “Old Playboy” as he never revealed his identity.

“I hope the government can give me a chance to turn over a new leaf and start a new life,” Xue told China National Radio after his release on bail. “I’ve admitted my guilt and I feel regret. I will never do it again,” he said.

Xue said he decided to “eat, drink, and be merry” after his cancer diagnosis, and “used money to satisfy my desires.”

But now he viewed his behavior as “the ugliest thing” in the world.

“It was immoral and decaying,” Xue said.

Xue is the co-founder of telecom firm UT Starcom, and has invested in other Chinese Internet startup firms, including PCPOP.com, an online electronic trading platform, and an Internet marketing company.

He had 12 million followers on Weibo microblog last August, though the number has now dropped to 11.56 million.
