Baby found alive dies in hospital
A BABY found alive after being sent to a funeral home for cremation in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, has died in hospital.
The boy succumbed to internal bleeding and multiple organ failure on Friday, the Anhui Provincial Children’s Hospital reported.
Health officials in the province said that the baby had been sent to the hospital on October 28 and was diagnosed with pneumonia and brain injuries.
His parents are said to have consulted an expert in Shanghai and were told that because of his congenital deformities it was unlikely treatment or surgery would be a success.
They reportedly signed a document to cease treatment and left the baby at the hospital.
The infant’s condition deteriorated on Monday and a doctor surnamed Zha issued a death certificate.
On Wednesday, the baby was sent to a funeral home but found alive during a routine check. Staff immediately made an emergency call and returned the baby to the hospital.
Health officials said Zha’s misdiagnosis was to be blame for the incident and criticized the way the neonatology department was managed. The provincial health department said the case was one of “serious misdiagnosis.”
The attending doctor’s license has been revoked, while hospital executives involved in the case were also punished.
