Amputee is given more exam time
A MAN who lost his arms as a child will be given extra time to complete his college entrance exams as an example of positive discrimination by local authorities.
Peng Chao, from southwest China’s Sichuan Province, took the test last year, but said that because of his disability — he writes using his foot — he was unable to finish in time, and hence failed, Chengdu Business News reported on Tuesday.
“I was pressed for time because I can only write slowly with my foot,” he said.
“If I’d had another 30 or 40 minutes, I could have finished all of the questions and would have had time to check my answers,” he said.
Last month, the Education Ministry appealed to local authorities to make the college exams more accessible for people with physical disabilities.
Officials in Sichuan responded by providing Peng with a specially adapted desk and chair, and said they will allow him extra time to complete the four papers, which he will sit this weekend.
